1.Meet Our Fab Dental Hygienist
As the time approaches for your active maintenance appointment, I wanted to let you know about an improvement in our procedures when you attend.

One of the most important reasons for coming regularly is the removal of the bacterial colonies (Plaque) from between the teeth and in the spaces (pockets) between the teeth and gums. This is important for three reasons.

* 80% of bad breath comes from the bacterial colonies.

* If we don’t remove this plaque, the bacteria will cause the loss of teeth due to periodontal (jawbone) disease. (This is how most teeth are lost).

* Researchers have found that people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without periodontal disease. (There is also a link with periodontal disease and stroke)

Gum disease cannot actually be cured because the bacterial colonies are always there and growing, but we can prevent the damage by effective and regular Active Maintenance. For all these reasons we are determined to provide you with the very best level of dental care to keep gum disease at bay.

For some time we have been looking to add the right specialist dental hygienist to our team and we are pleased to introduce our hygienists. The hygienist role is in “preventive dentistry” and they are experts in maintaining the health of the surrounding and supporting tissues and structures. I will be examining your mouth to make sure all’s well and our hygienist will take care of removing the bacterial plaque for the reasons I have mentioned. There is no extra charge and our hygienist will be available from 8 to 5pm Monday to Friday.

We look forward to seeing you soon and trust you are keeping well and of course flossing furiously!

2. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) benefits approximately 3 million children between the ages 2 and 17 by covering the costs of basic dental services. It commenced on January 01, 2014. Each eligible child is entitled to dental treatment worth $1000 during a two-year period.

Dental services covered by the scheme include examinations, X-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals, and extractions. Orthodontic and cosmetic treatments are not covered.

We are pleased to inform you that we accept children eligible under the Medicare CDBS scheme at both our Epping and Hornsby clinics. Please call our Epping practice on: 9868 3037 or our Hornsby practice on: 9476 6731 for further information and to check your entitlements. 3. Our Sterilisation

At The Dentist Hornsby & Rawson Dental we treat infection control and your safety very seriously. Our dental sterilisation is purpose built, and is staffed with an appropriately trained steri nurse. All reusable instruments are cleaned and then sterilised in accordance with current Australian Standards and short cuts are never taken. Our bench top sterilisers and associated equipment are TGA approved and are tested, calibrated and maintained by fully qualified service personnel on a regular base. Each sterilisation cycle is monitored to ensure that dental sterilisation parameters are met. All critical instruments are individually wrapped or packed (including dental handpieces), maintaining sterility until the package is opened for use on a specific patient. No item is released for use until it has been checked for the integrity of its outer wrap, seals, labelling, and colour of the chemical indicator.

Most importantly, we can track each item that has been used for a patient, when it has been sterilised and bring up all the details of the sterilisation batch at any given point.

4.Dental Practice Accreditation

Both our dental practices at Hornsby and Epping have been accredited. This is independent recognition that our practice meets the requirements of defined criteria and standards. Accreditation is an internationally recognised evaluation process used to assess the quality of dental care and services.

In order to achieve accreditation we have demonstrated a commitment to the provision of excellent dental care and continuous quality improvement within the practice environment.

Dental Practice Accreditation is awarded by an independent accrediting agency once a practice has submitted evidence demonstrating compliance with the National Safety and Quality in Health Service (NSQHS) Standards.
