Child Care Oral Hygiene Demonstrations by Elizabeth

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share to all of you my experience of presenting our local oral health education program which I absolutely loved to the fullest!

In our practice, we encourage younger generations to learn how to properly keep their teeth clean and maintain good oral hygiene. I thought this was a great idea to be able to continue this work outside the surgery at the grass root level. I never had the proper teachings of knowing how to brush my teeth or how long I have to brush them for or even how many times I had to visit the dentist  back when I was in school (had I known I’m sure I would have even better teeth….)

Dressed up in fairy wings, with my magic wand and pixie ears at the local preschool, I was quite sure they were all ears and eyes once they realised I was a friend of the Tooth Fairy. Explaining how to brush our teeth with dancing and encouraging them to learn what’s good for them to eat and drink was really enjoyable, especially knowing they are going to benefit from it all. Our local preschoolers were so inquisitive at such a young age, I was amazed. I really think educating the younger generations to know how to prevent tooth decay and practice good oral hygiene will make a huge impact on their future.

It’s great to see that we had the opportunity to actually be in the front line teaching our youngsters how to keep their oral health up to a tee, and have the proper methods of brushing and flossing your teeth 2 times a day!

To finish off all the fun of learning, I handed out dental health gifts bags to all the youngsters: it had toothpaste, a colouring in paper, a brochure and letter to mums and dads explaining what we had learnt today. Despite expecting lollies in the bags, the kids were still thrilled.

I was also thrilled to do the presentations, I wished to do all of them! It was great to hear the children repeat back things I had tried to teach and impart on them.

“It is not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do for themselves that will make them successful”
